Aronian wins again

Today climbers Iker and Eneko Pou, sponsored by Euskaltel, make the first move of the 3rd round.

In the game between Shirov and Aronian, Alexei chose to play one of Aronian's opening specialities, the Marshall gambit. Levon deviated from his favourite continuation with the black pieces. During the game we saw a confident Levon making quick moves and a defensive Shirov, spending a lot of time thinking about every single move. Shirov was getting short of time, while Aronian was putting more and more pressure on his opponent. Eventually Shirov, before being forced to face the decisive attack, decided to surrender at an early point, when both the time and his opponent's pressure was becoming unbearable.

In the game between Karjakin and the leader Grischuk we saw a Ruy Lopez opening, where Grischuk opted to use the Zaitsev variation, one of the latest in this opening. White achieved a small advantage in terms of space, which allowed him to gather pieces around the black king and to have a threatening position. In the critical moment, Karjakin omitted the crucial line partly at the cost of his advantage. However, Karjakin regained the initiative on the kingside, with a final decisive attack during the zeitnot that eventually led to his victory.
