Grischuk wins in the first round

In a sunny evening, the four grand masters paid their respects to the Mayor Iñaki Azkuna, just before entering the cube that will host the tournament during this week

After that they entered the perfectly isolated environment under the supervision of Mr. Faik Gasanov, the arbiter of the tournament. Outside the glass cube, 100 chess players took part in the 2nd edition of the Bilbao City - Biscay Chess Federation blitz tournament

The game of Karjakin and Shirov has ended in draw. Shirov has changed his usual election for the opening, choosing a dragon variation of the sicilian. After the game Shirov acknowledged that all the game was a preparation that he did today with his seconds. Karjakin has acknowledged that he has been surprised by his opponent. Shirov has improved the way of playing the middle-game position, based in doing flexible moves before the pawn sacrifice that has allowed him to attack white's king.

In the other game, Aronian has repeated the Moscow Defence as he did half a year ago in Linares. Aronian has made an interesting exchange sacrifice that has led to good activity and a favorable pawn structure- Grischuk defended tightly and reached a balanced position. It is possible that Aronian has played too optimistically and Grischuk has neutralized the initiative slowly. In the zeitnot Aronian finally lost his initiative probably pressed by the lack of time. From this moment on, after four hours and a half of fight, Grischuk has won with great technique.
